Expertise:

Nondestructive evaluation (NDE), structural health monitoring, mechanical behavior of aging structures, composites interfaces, smart sensor phenomena, damage parameters, life prediction

Professor Matikas specializes in the development of structural health monitoring methodologies for the quantification of damage and life prediction of materials and structures under complex mechanical (LCF/HCF, FOD, TMF, fretting fatigue), thermal, environmental, diffusion and other loading conditions. Research interests include: aging structures in aerospace, nuclear, civil, cultural heritage and biomedical engineering applications; development of advanced NDE methods (ultrasonics, acoustic emission, acoustic microscopy, nonlinear acoustics, IR thermography, electrical methods, diffraction techniques, interferometric techniques) for real-time evaluation of damage in metallic alloys, coatings, composites, ceramics, nano-structured materials and coatings, functional and smart materials, bio-materials, cement-based materials, phononic metamaterials. 3D digital documentation and assessment of cultural heritage monuments. Safety of packaging materials.
